The Knights Templar
Formed at the end of the First Crusade, The Knights Templar were a monastic military order with the purpose of protecting Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. This is probably the first time in history a group of secular knights banded together and took monastic vows. It is thought they became the first Warrior Monks. The Templars fought along side Richard The Lion Heart (King Richard I of England) and other Crusaders in the battles for the Holy Lands during this time.
Today, according to the society's own website, the Knights Templar are a 'Christian-oriented fraternal organization and an integral part of the Masonic Fraternity'.1
